The name “Canada” comes from a Native American word that means “Big Village” or “Settlement”

One of the most popular theories is that Canada got its name from the St. Lawrence Iroquoian word “kanata”, which means “village” or “settlement”. The indigenous peoples of the area would use this word to describe the settlement of Stadacona, which was located in modern-day Quebec City.
