I am afraid if there is anything to be afraid of. A precipice cannot hurt you. Lions and tigers can. The streets of New York I consider more dangerous than the Matterhorn to a thoroughly competent and careful climber.

I see myself as a climber and an activist.

It is only when it takes the form of physical addiction that sex is evil. It is also evil when it manifests itself as a way of satisfying the lust for power or the climber’s craving for position and social distinction.

I think everybody has a dream of flying at least once in their life. For me, it’s been over and over a recurring dream. It’s mostly that. That desire to be as free as the birds, to be unhindered. I started off as – and am still – a free solo climber. So being in the air is a huge fear of mine. So there’s a combination of going toward my fear as well as being fascinated with the air.

The one thing that matters is the effort. It continues, whereas the end to be attained is but an illusion of the climber, as he fares on and on from crest to crest; and once the goal is reached it has no meaning.

I’ve never really had a TV career. I’ve been a soldier and a climber.
