In all the movies I’m in love with someone in my head. There’s always love in a film somewhere. It doesn’t matter even if it’s an action movie.

I grew up with action movies in my head.

I don’t like doing action movies. They’re not that interesting… it’s fun to do the physical element but the really fun stuff, like running into exploding buildings, they won’t let you do. I was coming from a very cerebral, dark, difficult, layered play by Christopher Hampton and doing an action movie in Hollywood (Die Hard) with explosions, and I was holding a gun.

Nowadays the movies that people are going to see in the theaters are the big-event movies, like Spider-Man or something, or they’re 25-year-old models who are vampires, or they’re very broad comedies, or they’re standard action movies. So if you’re going to work for a studio and do a movie for the budget that the movie needs, those are the kinds of movies you’ll be in.

Why did I spend all these years playing boring Europeans? I was made for action movies.

I’ve been fortunate in that I’ve been able to have that balance as an actress to be able to do the wild, fun action movies and also be allowed to do the dramas. Hopefully, if I’m able to keep that balance, I’d love to always try to do both.

3D is quite a lot more advanced in animated movies; for live-action movies we’re just taking baby steps, we’re just in the beginning.
