I grew up in a household in Venezuela with living, breathing art installations that were the way that she used to express herself, a highly creative environment where ideas were celebrated, where artistic expression was celebrated. Seeing her as somebody who was always able to have a creative output – if she felt sad, she wrote a poem, if she felt happy, she made a sculpture – I think for me, there was an early interest in finding outlets for my passions.

In my university, I was elected student chairman and later became chairman of the city’s Students Federation.

I could have been, and may one day well be a high school English teacher, because I’ve been given so much I just feel like I have to give something back. The fact that some people consider my work to be good or strong, it’s nice, but I know in my heart that if it’s not coming – oftentimes it’s probably not coming from the best place.

When I started writing seriously in high school, English was the language I had at my disposal – my Spanish was domestic, colloquial, and not particularly literary or sophisticated.
